Modigliani: Tortured Artist

Recently, I needed to locate a house warming gift for friends but we were totally out of      ideas. On a similar occasion they’d given us with a quaich, a Scottish symbol of eternal friendship, and so i was feeling We needed to get something more than just a card.

Our friends really are an unconventional couple you just can’t pigeonhole.  They are  smart, humorous and true individuals and since they were moving in into a new house, I decided a showy item could be suitable, but I was at a loss as to what to choose? My own preference runs to objects from the ancient world, like {Roman art} and Greek statues. I spent ages in search of something outstanding, a present that had a story behind it, but Aphrodite didn’t seem right, an Alexander bust was something I knew they already had and Hippocrates might have been ideal for a doctor, but not for an IT expert married to a lawyer. What I wanted was a little something the same and also, like my friends, completely different.

My ultimate choice was a Modigliani sculpture, an elongated female head sculpture quite different from the traditional sculpture I’d thought about but somehow precisely the same. Classical but primitive simultaneously Modigliani art is plainly influenced by African Masks and Polynesian sculpture, clean and rounded whilst prolonged and angular, it is the contradiction that helps make the statues so wonderful.

Modigliani’s story is a sad one. Born in 1884, his ability for painting was obvious from early on, but his life was ruled by tuberculosis.  His mother made sure he had the best quality training, and he had been very well respected by his art teacher, even though he formulated his own personal style which has much more in common with the angular Art Deco movement yet to come than the curvaceous Art Nouveau still in fashion. Most of all, it is even now a style of it’s own, quite unique.

Similar to countless now famous artists Modigliani was relatively undiscovered in his own lifetime. He generated a tremendous volume of work, often up to 100 paintings per day, however most of the time he gave these to friends or girlfriends that did not keep them. It seems as if he understood his life would be brief, and perhaps as a result of that, he took to drugs and alcohol, to the point where some claimed his unique style had been credited entirely to hashish, however it was plainly not true.   He was a follower of Nietzsche and Baudelaire and came to the conclusion true originality required disorder and defiance. At one point in his career he destroyed most of his earlier works declaring them far inferior.

As time went by his wellness grew even worse. He was rejected for military service in the First World War and continued to reside in Paris, never knowing if the upcoming payment of his allowance would appear. He was good looking and charming and women liked him, but even though he had been able to showcase a few art works in the course of his life, he never made any money from them.

He passed away a pauper, from meningitis, his bedding discolored with oily fat from a sardine can, the only thing he had still left to eat.  As always, there had been a female involved. Much more youthful than Modigliani and on the day he perished almost nine months pregnant with their 2nd child. After his passing her family members took her home and the girl stepped backwards out of a window, killing herself and the unborn baby.

The tales about Modigliani’s lifetime are full of contradiction. Many have tried to say that the woman, Jeanne Hebuterne was merely one more passing fad for the artist, but their daughter’s analysis revealed the girl had been an artist off considerable skill. Her figurines were exhibited for the first time in an exhibition in 2000.

As for the Modigliani art we settled on, the sculpture itself is elongated and abstract depiction of a woman’s head that is both soft yet striking. We don’t fully understand who she’s intended to be; there isn’t any tale unless we make one.  Virtually no particular type of furnishings is required. The Modigliani bust would look great anywhere.

Personally, part of the charm of the item as a gift is actually the likeness between the artisan and my friends. Both funny, brilliant and appealing, a rebel and an individual. There the similarities between them end.
