Choosing Portable Oxygen Equipment

September 14, 2010 by TreadmillsCenter · Leave a Comment

In the not too recent past people with respiratory disorders who required supplemental oxygen would find it extremely difficult to travel because of their specialist needs.  The longer the distance, the more difficult it would be to plan ahead when it came to organising vacations due to the exhaustive list of things that needed to be prepared.  Not only would a portable oxygen concentrator need to be sourced, but the rules and regulations for the planned public transport would have to be taken into consideration.

It used to be the case that the only realistic alternatives for portable travel oxygen would be oxygen tanks. The most obvious issue with these would be the weight of the tank – and then there is the amount of oxygen it can store.  If this weren’t awkward enough the various public transport organisations all had different rules and regulations as to what you could carry on board. This would be especially problematic if you had planned on travelling by air as the set of regulations that were put in place meant that the amount of oxygen you could take would severely restrict what you could take on board.  This of course would limit how long the oxygen supply could last for so any sort of air travel would require meticulous calculation ahead of the journey.  Thankfully as the technology has improved there are now a wider range of travel oxygen concentrators which are much smaller, yet can deliver more oxygen.

If you are one of these people who have lived with supplemental oxygen for a long time, you will know that day-to-day activities have become much less stressful due to the adaptability of these portable oxygen devices.  It is only in recent years that air travel in particular has become that much more accommodating for oxygen dependant passengers.

If you are travelling by train then it is recommended that you notify the train company at least 24 hours prior to travelling. As with any sort of travelling plans, it is always best to buy yourself as much time as possible.  Usually the maximum amount of oxygen allowed on board should not exceed 50lbs (the size of a double tank).  These tanks should not be separable and they cannot be on wheels.A 6 tank setup may be allowable; however each individual tank must not exceed 20lbs.  Most travel oxygen concentrators will require electrical power and as such must have their own self contained battery pack as you shouldn’t rely on the train having an adequate power source.

If you are travelling by car then most travel oxygen devices can be used with a car lighter adapter or internal batteries.  You should get into the habit of carrying a copy of your prescription with you at all times.  This should contain details of the required oxygen litre flow as well as the hours of use along with a list of any additional medications that you are receiving. It is well worth making several copies of this prescription in case you need to present it to flight attendants or oxygen suppliers throughout theourney.

Just Breathe

July 4, 2010 by TreadmillsCenter · Leave a Comment

So, it’s been pretty windy here in Jacksonville, Florida and I’d assume for the rest of the chilly country. As per the norm, I went for a run to train for The River Run this next weekend and triied running over the bridges here in Mayport and was blown away (literally) by the wind. It was so windy!!! When I reached the to p of the bridge I stopped and just took a breath and felt AMAZING! There really is nothing like a deep inhalation of clean, fresh air. So, here I go, on a mission to do some sort of research on air, breathing and massage. Trying to intertwine these and find information. I did some research and found an amzing article on breathing meditaion. It’s below…enjoy! “We can connect ourselves with a basic force of nature by focusing on the essential element of air during a wind meditation. We begin by centering ourselves on our breath. We inhale the life-giving force, feeling it fill us, and then releasing it into the world to let our breath mingle with the breath of nature. If we cannot feel the wind right now, we can recall times when the wind has sent us gifts of caresses on bare skin, ruffling our clothes and playing with our hair. We can evoke sounds carried on the wind, maybe laughter or song, or perhaps just the wind’s own whispers through the trees or across the landscape of our ears. We may summon up an image of falling flowers or leaves from above, vivid colors set free with the wind’s encouragement. We may envision birds drifting on unseen currents with wings unbent, or flags and banners unfurled in the breeze. The scent of a sea breeze may come to mind, or the aromas of freshly baked treats or fragrant blooms that reach us from a distance. As these memories enliven our senses, we are feeling the vital force that surrounds and animates us. We can look to the trees to sway in time with nature’s rhythm. Just as we can be soothed by the wind, we know that nature has great power. In a rush it can block out all sound, leaving us with only the beating of our hearts. Wind can even make the inanimate dance and whirl gracefully. With a gentle sigh, the wind has carried sailors to faraway lands and balloons to great heights above. We can entrust the wind to carry our voices and best wishes out into the world, knowing it will be carried to its perfect destination. Releasing these precious offerings to its care, we remember that nature’s power is as close as our breath, and we breathe deeply once again before returning to the world around us.” Don’t you just feel more at ease and peaceful just reading that? I know I do. Now, do yourself a favor and go outside (I know it’s probably chilly), close your eyes and take one. Deep. Breath.

ALLERGY: NUTRITION & SUPPLEMENT

August 9, 2009 by TreadmillsCenter · Leave a Comment

This is a discussion of the primary issues involved with Allergies and the strategies that you have to resolve to completely correct the underlying physical imbalance. Traditional Chinese herbs and medicine and nutrition are spelled out in detail to move quickly from the inflamed state or to compliment other remedies.

Uncomplicated Understanding & Simple Solutions for Allergies

The primary reason for an allergy is due to an excess ingestion of food, contaminated air, water or a deficiency in the body due to lack of mineral, vitamin and physical energy. The deficiency and excess conditions result in toxicity which can spread from one organ to the next, disrupting organ function and homeostasis or general balance.

The human body is always working on maintaining balance and involves every organ and system to maintain that harmony. For instance, if the lungs and digestion are not able to manage seasonal pollens, mold and microbes then:

  • the nasal passages will excessively drain to clear out the overflowing toxins.
  • The lungs – bronchi – trachea produce mucus, all to assist the cleansing of excess.
  • liver function may become overtaxed and over-heated thus drying out mucus making it difficult to clear mucus obstruction and decreasing immune function

There are many examples of allergic reaction that are an extension of an excess/deficient constitution type. The purpose of this lens is to comprensively, present respiratory allergy and list more bonafide solutions that are finally corrective. Most allergic conditions take years to arrive. Cutting out so called, non-perfoming organs is irreversible, do not resolve the underlying cause and, many times, prevents the ability of the body to heal itself. Below, you will discover Traditional Chinese herbs and nutrition strategies for improving and alleviating allergic interence with the quality of your life.

ALLERGY NUTRITION

Foods to Increase and Avoid in Your Diet

The foods below are recommended because they alleviate excess mucus production and obstruction in the channels (energy and circulation). Due to this clogging function, disruption occurs in the detoxing organs as wella s the channels for eliminating the excess in food and toxins. Even though the foods below do not contribute allergic reaction, too much of the foods can result in allergy conditions.

  • Foods: bee pollen, honey, citrus seed, protein foods (small amount, often), onions, sprouted wheat, sprouted legumes, sprouted seeds, micro-algae, chlorophyll-rich foods, cereal grasses, liver support foods/herbs,
  • Drinks: Almond milk, Herb teas (no lemon or orange), Pure fruit juices without sugar or additives (dilute 50:50 with water), Roasted grain beverages may be used as coffee substitutes, Seltzer (salt free), Soy milk without corn oil, Spring water in glass bottles
  • Cereals: Oatmeal, Oat bran, Cream of rye, Puffed rice and millet, Diluted apple juice, apple slices, and nuts go well on cereal. Use soymilk that has no corn oil added or almond milk.
  • Grains and flour: Bean flour, Buckwheat flour, 100% buckwheat soba noodles, Cooked whole gains, such as oats, millet, barley, buckwheat groats (kasha), rice macaroni, spelt (flour and pasta), brown rice, amaranth, quinoa, rice, or millet breads (that contain no dairy, eggs, sugar, or wheat), Potato flour, 100% rice cakes, Rice crackers, Rice flour, 100% rye or spelt bread with no wheat, Rye crackers, Soy flour
  • Legumes: Black beans, Chickpeas, Kidney beans, Lentils, Navy beans, Peas, Soybeans, String beans, Tofu, Dried beans should be soaked overnight. Pour off the water and rinse before cooking. Canned beans often contain added sugar or other potential allergens. Some cooked beans packaged in glass jars, and sold at health food stores, contain no sugar.
  • Nuts and seeds: Nuts and seeds, either raw or roasted, without salt or sugar, Nut butters from health food stores or from fresh ground nuts (such as almond butter, cashew butter, walnut butter, sesame butter, and sesame tahini)
  • Oils: Use cold-pressed or expeller-pressed oils (available from health food stores), as they are safer for the heart and blood vessels. Do not use corn oil or “vegetable oil” from an unspecified source, as this is usually corn oil. Flaxseed (edible linseed) oil, Olive oil, Peanut oil, Safflower oil, Sesame oil, Soy oil, Sunflower oil
  • Protein: tuna, salmon, and other Fresh fish, Lamb, Poultry and fowl
  • Vegetables: All vegetables except corn are generally acceptable. Tomatoes sometimes cause problems and should be avoided by susceptible individuals.

AVOID THE FOLLOWING FOOD:

  • Peanuts are a common food allergen and should be avoided, along with peanut butter
  • Canola oil (rapeseed)
  • Lack of dietary changes will yield allergic conditions
  • Excess consumption of food, This variable is determined by the individual’s current detox function.
  • Glucan sensitive foods based on wheat (not every has this issue)
  • Deadly Nightshade plants (tomatoes, egg plant, potatoes) minority suffer from this sensitivity.
  • Sugars
  • Excitotoxins (most sugar replacements except stevia, Agave nectar, etc.)
  • Incomplete foods or Non-whole foods
  • Breads made from flour as opposed to complete whole grain bread

As an individual becomes more toxic or builds up excess obstructive components in the body then the allergic conditions tend to increase unless you reverse the toxic pattern. You have to give your body a break until it finds its equilibrium.
