homes for sale Let me give you an example of a family dynamic that contributed to the development of an eating disorder in a particular adolescent. I worked with a family, years ago, where the dad was diagnosed with a terminal illness. As the family rallied around him, there were no extended family members to help attend to the kids needs, while their mom attended to their dad’s needs.

juegos Several things happened in this situation. The kids not only lost their dad to a debilitating and progressively deteriorating illness, they also lost their mom because she was doing all she could to take care of her husband and her kids at the same time. trabajo The second thing that happened is the mother and oldest teenage daughter developed a special bond following dad’s death. A couple years later mom met a man and remarried, and the oldest daughter felt abandoned and a deep sense of loss. She lost her dad, her mom during her dad’s illness, got her mom back after he died and now lost her again to another husband. Within a few months of her mother’s remarriage, they were in my office because the daughter refused to eat and was losing weight.

Adolescents age 15 to 18 years old and college age girls may be more complicated. Developmentally she is working on separating from you and may not be as open to you taking such an active role in what and when she eats. In these situations the therapist can take a primary role as an objective party and serve as her counselor. What is most important is that the therapist sees you as an integral and necessary part of your daughter’s recovery. Ideally, family therapy can coincide with your daughter’s individual therapy, and any other parent coaching you may be receiving.

Every family is different and these differences need to be evaluated on a case by case basis. If you are trying to handle the recovery at home and are not making progress, it is wise to consult with a professional therapist who has experience with eating disorders. You may only need some advice on implementation or tweaking what you are already doing or you may need additional support with more professional involvement.

The most important variable in evaluating when to seek help and your family’s needs is not the age of your child, but her openness to help and her response to your guidance and limit setting regarding food. If she is unwilling to abide by the limits you set around food, consult a professional therapist with eating disorder experience. I cannot stress it enough; if she resists guidance from you, seek help now. You can be published without charge. You can to republish this article in your website or blog.
