One Man’s Quest To Find A Cure For Stuttering

I developed a stutter or as some people call it a stammer in childhood. From what my parents tell me it started when I was four years of age.

Despite regular speech therapy over the next fourteen years my stutter became worse. I remember quite clearly the fear of having to read out from a book in class. Walking into the classroom, for example an English lesson, I would see that there was a book on each desk. I would start to panic straight away believing the teacher would make me read a paragraph. Just waiting my turn, knowing that it would result in yet another one of those stuttering moments would be complete torture.

Socialising with friends was not exactly easy for me either. I am fairly sure that the majority of people enjoy going out with their friends and even look forward to the prospect. For me though this was not the case, I would be counting down the days as the week went on.

My worst area of speech was using the telephone. I certainly had a phobia to the phone and was quite lucky as my father would make a lot of my calls for me. Some people may say that this was not exactly helping me in the long run. This may be correct and I was very grateful at the time.

After leaving school, I started to attend interviews to try to find employment. I would normally stutter more when under pressure or when meeting new people and both of these situations are prevalent in an interview situation. I would normally arrive at the interview very tired after a lack of sleep through the stress of it all and I have to say found it very difficult to convince any employer to take me on.

As you can no doubt imagine I was eager to find a way of stopping stuttering and I did eventually attain fluency after purchasing a seventy minute self-help stuttering therapy DVD from the UK. .

This was my history of having a stutter and as you can see it was to have a happy ending – stuttering can be overcome with hard work and dedication.

Stammering And Stuttering

In the world of stuttering treatments there is unfortunately rather a lot of trash out there. You may believe that this is a rather hard hitting statement however if you are a person who has a stutter then I am confident that you will understand what I am saying. There are, however, treatments for stammering and stuttering that do work, I will be writing about these in this article.

So which stammering and stuttering therapies do work? Well the first piece of advice that I will give is that the treatments that are offered by people who have previously had and overcome this form of speech impediment are likely to prove to be the most beneficial.

There are how to stopĀ stuttering therapy courses on the market which are run by people who formerly had a stammer or stutter. The second piece of advice is that the courses which are on a one-to-one basis are likely to be of more benefit than those that are on a group basis. Yes there is likely to be a longer waiting time before a person can attend a one-to-one course, this is essentially because they are more popular, for obvious reasons.

Over the last few years there has been an ever increasing demand and popularity for self-help stuttering therapy products. There are now some excellent alternatives within the market place including a DVD, an e-book and an audio book.

The third and final piece of advice, well at least for this article, that I will provide, is in relation to these self-help stammering/stuttering therapy products. Before you decide to purchase you should ensure that there is a support service which you can contact if you have any questions from watching, listening and reading the material. If there is not a support service in place then it could be well worth seeking an alternative form of stammering treatment.

Please Help Me To Stop Stuttering

Mum I need to talk with you. What is the matter son? I just can not cope living with this stutter for any longer, please will you help me to find a solution? I really need to achieve fluency, I have to learn a way to cure this horrible stutter. Of course I will help you.

The above is a conversation which I had with my mother when I was aged sixteen. I had just arrived home after spending a most frustrating day out with my friends during which my speech was dreadful. The problems started at the train station when I attempted to order my train ticket, I could not say the word “return”, I felt so small. Luckily I have some very good friends and they were very supportive. Don’t worry about it mate, you managed to say the rest of the words fine. This was nice but I still felt very down and a little bit depressed about what had happened. What is wrong with? Why can I not speak properly? Why have I got this horrible stutter? I try to be a decent person in everything that I do in life therefore I can not understand as to why I have this annoying stutter?

My speech was basically OK for the next few hours but then it took a huge turn for the worse when we went to a fast food restaurant for lunch. There was a voice within my head which suggested that it would be best to ask a friend to order the food for me. In a way this was like being rather weak. I tried my very best to convince myself that I would be OK, speech wise. Well at least I was attempting to think in a positive manner but it was to no avail, yes the stammering did occur, it was when attempting to say the word “cheeseburger”.

Around two hours later I was in a sports shop as I wanted to buy a pair of trainers. After finding a pair that I thought looked good, I went up to the shop worker to ask for a size seven. Guess what? Yes you’ve guessed it, the stuttering reared its ugly head yet again.

By the time that I arrived home I was mentally and emotionally exhausted. I had had enough, this was the last straw. I was now desperate to find a form of stuttering helpĀ that would actually work.

I could not continue to live life with this stuttering problem and decided to fight back against this annoying speech impediment and its associaed demons.
