Americans are fatter today than they were a decade ago. Obesity is already an epidemic in this country and the number of overeweight and obese people continues to increase. What is even more alarming is the fact that not only are adult men and women becoming excessively fat, even youngsters are turning obese! And if that wasn’t enough, obesity-related health problems such as heart disease and diabetes are also on the rise.

Health experts and nutritionists almost unanimously agree that serious lifestyle changes are in order. Weight gain and obesity is the result of an unhealthy diet and a sedentary lifestyle. Unfortunately Americans live a convenient lifestyle of fast food meals and inactivity. The computerized world we live in has changed the way we work and spend our leisure time. People these days spend a huge chunk of their time in front of the computer-researching, shopping, socializing, selling, writing… Now we have become a nation of computer savy fatsos. There used to be a time when people just did not easily become obese, nowadays however, the lifestyle most of us live makes us very vulnerable to excessive weight gain. If your Body Mass Index or BMI exceeds 30, then you are already become obese.

Being healthy is not the easiest thing to do. It involves being free of vices, not giving in to peer pressure, getting enough rest and sleep, engaging in regular exercise, and making the right food choices. It is usually with the diet and nutrition part that people get confused. A diet program is not the same as a nutritional plan. The former does not necessarily have to be healthy. Its main purpose is simply to lower a dieter’s weight. This may include fad diets which are typically severely lacking in nutrients and yield only temporary weight loss. Aside from these, such diets also cause negative health consequences. The best diet that would help dieters lose weight in a safe and healthy manner is a high-fiber diet. This diet is not meant to be a temporary one. Its high nutritional value and the various health benefits it offers apart from weight loss makes it the best general diet for everyone to follow. Permanent weight loss entails making lifestyle changes and the diet component of this switch healthy living is a high-fiber diet.

This diet is one that consists of fibrous fruits, vegetables, bran, and whole wheat. Fiber can be honestly called a wonder ingredient as it detoxifies and cleanses the digestive tract, it staves off hunger for long periods of time and it absorbs excess fat and cholesterol and removes it from the system during bowel movement.

As kids our mothers admonished us to eat our vegetables and the rise of fiber as a highly valuable nutritional element proves that they were right all along. Mom certainly knows best and its not too late to heed her advice.
